Unveiling the Best Homemade Oreo Sugar Cookie Recipe

Let’s clarify one thing from the start: while these cookies taste remarkably like Oreos, they are not a recipe for homemade sandwich cookies. We’re focusing on a sensational sugar cookie that masterfully incorporates the distinctive Oreo essence. Perhaps a true homemade Oreo or a tribute to Thomas Keller’s famous TKO (Thomas Keller Oreo) is a project for another day – those were always a favorite of mine during my time at Bouchon Bakery in Las Vegas. But for now, prepare to indulge in these extraordinary bakery-inspired Oreo-flavored cookies, crafted by your own hands. It’s a win-win: gourmet cookies, zero travel required!

Essential Ingredients for Your Homemade CRUMBL Oreo Sugar Cookies

Gathering the right ingredients is the first step to creating these incredible Oreo cookies. Each component plays a vital role in achieving that perfect CRUMBL-like taste and texture. Below is a breakdown of what you’ll need, along with tips for optimal results. For precise measurements, always refer to the full recipe card further down the page.

  • Oreos: This recipe specifically calls for regular Oreo cookies, not the Double Stuffed or Thins varieties. The standard Oreo provides the ideal cookie-to-cream ratio for grinding, ensuring the perfect texture and chocolate intensity in your cookie dough.
  • All-Purpose Flour: The foundational ingredient for our cookie structure. Ensure you measure it correctly by spooning it into your measuring cup and leveling it off, rather than scooping directly from the bag, which can lead to too much flour.
  • Corn Starch: A secret weapon for incredibly soft and chewy cookies! Corn starch inhibits gluten development, resulting in a tender crumb that melts in your mouth. Don’t skip this for that signature CRUMBL softness.
  • Cocoa Powder: For a truly intense and deep chocolate flavor, a good quality baking cocoa powder is essential. It contributes to the rich dark color and amplifies the overall Oreo taste in the cookie base.
  • Baking Soda & Baking Powder: These leavening agents work in harmony to give our cookies their perfect rise and a slightly crisp edge while maintaining a soft center. They’re key to achieving the desired thickness and chewiness.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt is crucial for balancing the sweetness and enhancing all the other flavors in the cookie. It brings out the depth of the chocolate and prevents the cookies from tasting overly saccharine.
  • Cream of Tartar: Another often-overlooked ingredient that contributes significantly to the soft, chewy texture. It reacts with baking soda to create a tender, almost cake-like crumb, keeping your cookies fresh for longer.
  • Unsalted Butter: Using unsalted butter allows you to control the overall salt content of your recipe. Ensure it’s softened to room temperature for proper creaming with the sugars, which creates air pockets for a lighter cookie.
  • Granulated Sugar, Brown Sugar & Powdered Sugar: This trifecta of sugars is vital for achieving the complex texture of these cookies. Granulated sugar provides crispness, brown sugar adds moisture and chewiness (due to molasses content), and powdered sugar contributes to softness and a melt-in-your-mouth quality.
  • Unflavored Oil: A touch of unflavored oil, such as vegetable or canola oil, adds extra richness and moisture to the cookies, ensuring they remain incredibly tender and prevent them from drying out.
  • Large Egg: The egg acts as a binding agent, holding all the ingredients together, and contributes to the cookie’s structure and richness. Ensure it’s at room temperature for better emulsification with other ingredients.
  • Vanilla Extract: An essential for the buttercream frosting, high-quality vanilla extract adds a layer of aromatic depth and classic sweetness that perfectly complements the rich chocolate cookies.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your CRUMBL Oreo Cookies Copycat Recipe

Making these copycat CRUMBL Oreo cookies is a straightforward and rewarding process. Follow these detailed steps to achieve perfect results every time. Remember to consult the full recipe card below for exact measurements and further tips!

  1. Prepare the Oreo Crumbs and Dry Ingredients: Begin by finely crushing your regular Oreo cookies in a food processor until they resemble fine crumbs. In a separate large bowl, combine these crushed Oreos with the all-purpose flour, corn starch, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt. Whisk everything together thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed. Set this mixture aside.
  2. Cream Wet Ingredients: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or using a hand mixer), cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar. Beat on medium-high speed until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color, typically 2-3 minutes. This step is crucial for incorporating air, which contributes to the cookies’ soft texture.
  3. Incorporate Egg and Oil: Add the large egg and the unflavored oil to the creamed butter and sugar mixture. Mix on medium speed until everything is just combined and smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated without overmixing.
  4. Gradually Add Dry Ingredients: With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients in two separate increments. Mix only until the dry ingredients are just incorporated and no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix the dough, as this can lead to tough cookies.
  5. Scoop and Bake: Using a large cookie scoop (about 1/4 cup or 3-4 tablespoons of dough per cookie), portion out uniform cookie dough balls. Place them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring enough space between each cookie. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8-9 minutes. The edges should be set, but the centers might still appear slightly soft.
  6. Cool and Frost: Allow the freshly baked cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5-10 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. While the cookies are cooling, prepare your luscious buttercream frosting. Once the cookies are entirely cool, generously spread the buttercream over each cookie and sprinkle with additional crushed Oreo crumbs for that authentic CRUMBL finish. Enjoy your homemade masterpiece!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About CRUMBL Oreo Cookies

Here are some common questions to help you master your homemade CRUMBL Oreo cookies:

Can I use Double Stuffed Oreos or Thin Oreos for these cookies?

For the best results and to maintain the intended texture of these copycat cookies, it’s highly recommended to use regular Oreo cookies. Double Stuffed Oreos contain too much cream, which can introduce excess moisture into the dough and alter its consistency, making your cookies potentially too soft or crumbly. Conversely, Thin Oreos lack sufficient cookie and cream content to provide the rich flavor and structure needed for this specific recipe. Sticking with regular Oreos ensures you achieve the perfect balance and authentic CRUMBL-like experience.

How to store these Oreo sugar cookies?

Proper storage is key to keeping your delicious chocolate sugar cookies fresh and delightful. These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, maintaining their soft and chewy texture. For extended freshness, you can also refrigerate them in an airtight container for up to 7 days. Just remember to allow them to come back to room temperature before enjoying, as they can become quite firm when chilled. For long-term storage, these cookies freeze beautifully in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Thaw them overnight in the fridge, then let them reach room temperature before indulging.

Do I have to frost them?

While frosting is not strictly mandatory, it is highly recommended if you’re aiming for an authentic CRUMBL Oreo cookie copycat experience. The luscious buttercream frosting not only adds a layer of creamy sweetness but also enhances the overall Oreo flavor and provides that signature bakery look. If you prefer a simpler, unfrosted chocolate cookie, they will still be delicious! However, to truly replicate the CRUMBL magic, the frosting is an essential component.

Can I make the cookie dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can! This cookie dough is excellent for making in advance. Prepare the dough as instructed, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. When you’re ready to bake, let the dough sit at room temperature for about 15-30 minutes to soften slightly before scooping and baking. You can also freeze the dough balls for up to 2 months; just bake them from frozen, adding a minute or two to the baking time.

What kind of cocoa powder is best for these cookies?

For that rich, dark chocolate flavor typical of Oreos and CRUMBL cookies, we recommend using Dutch-processed cocoa powder. Dutch-processed cocoa has been treated to reduce its acidity, resulting in a darker color and a smoother, less bitter chocolate taste. If you only have natural cocoa powder, it will still work, but the flavor profile and color might be slightly different. Ensure your cocoa powder is unsweetened.

Ingredients

  • 25 oreo cookies
  • 1 cup + 1 tbsp flour
  • 3 tbsp corn starch
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 stick butter softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 large egg

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1/2 stick butter softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2-1 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup, then set it aside.
  • In a food processor, finely grind 25 regular Oreo cookies until they form fine, even crumbs. Transfer the crushed Oreos to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Add the all-purpose flour, corn starch, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt to the bowl. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly until well combined and uniform. Set this bowl aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or using a hand mixer and a large bowl), combine the softened butter, brown sugar, powdered sugar, and granulated sugar. Beat on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes, until the mixture is light, fluffy, and visibly creamy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure all ingredients are incorporated.
  • Add the large egg and the unflavored oil to the creamed mixture. Continue to mix on medium speed until all ingredients are just combined and the mixture is smooth. Be careful not to overmix at this stage.
  • With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the reserved dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients in two separate additions. Mix only until the dry ingredients are just incorporated into the dough and no dry streaks remain. Overmixing can lead to tough cookies. Once the dough comes together, use a large cookie scoop (approximately 1/4 cup per cookie) to scoop out 10 equally sized cookie dough balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving ample space between each cookie. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-9 minutes. The edges of the cookies should appear set, but the centers may still look slightly soft.
  • Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes. This allows them to firm up slightly before you transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Ensure cookies are fully cooled before frosting.

Make the Buttercream Frosting

  • In a clean stand mixer bowl (or using a hand mixer), cream the softened butter, powdered sugar, 1/2 tablespoon of heavy cream, and vanilla extract together. Beat on medium-high speed until the frosting becomes light, fluffy, and smooth. If the frosting appears too thick, add the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of heavy cream, one teaspoon at a time, until your desired consistency is reached.
  • Once the cookies are completely cooled, generously spread a dollop of the luscious buttercream frosting on top of each cookie. Finish by sprinkling a generous amount of additional crushed Oreo cookies over the frosting for that authentic CRUMBL look and extra Oreo crunch.
